Name
Beyond “Only 10%”: Coprolalia, Stigma, and (Not) Being the Stereotype
Date & Time
Saturday, June 13, 2026
Rena C. Zito, Ph.D. Mike Himle Ph.D.
Description

How does the “swearing disease” stereotype affect people with Tourette Syndrome (TS)? How do efforts to counter the stereotype affect people with obscene language tics? Drawing on her own lived experience and published research on coprolalia stigma, Dr. Zito will explore how efforts to challenge this stereotype can both empower and marginalize those who embody it. The session will combine a research presentation with open discussion, offering participants an opportunity to share experiences, reflect on internalized and external stigma, and consider new ways of talking and thinking about coprolalia within the TS community. Designed primarily for people with TS, the session will also offer valuable insight for family members and health professionals seeking to better understand the social dimensions of coprolalia.
